Storm Readiness 101

7/18/2024 (Permalink)

As leaders in the restoration industry, we know firsthand the amount of damage that a storm can do to your home. Addressing the damage as quickly as possible is key to preventing further damage from occurring. We wanted to share some of the most important areas of your home that can be affected by storm damage, so you know where to check afterward.

  1. Basement – Areas of your home that are underground are some of the spots that are the most prone to water damage following a storm. Check around the edges of your basement floor and walls for signs of moisture. Make sure that drain spouts are properly angled away from your home and that there are no areas where water can pool next to your house.
  2. Foundation – Similarly to basements, your home’s foundation is particularly threatened by water damage after storms. Water from the outside can seep into cracks in your foundation and weaken it over time. Double-check check there is no standing water or signs of moisture in your concrete, and make sure that your sump pump is functioning properly.
  3. Crawlspaces – Water can pool in areas underneath your home and cause significant damage to the structural components, like mold and rotting wood.
  4. Windows – Over time the seals on your windows can degrade and strong storms can crack windows and window frames, allowing water to get into your home.
  5. Roof – Probably the most prone to storm damage, wind can damage shingles and throw broken tree branches all over your home. As one of the main sources of protection from the outside elements. It is crucial to inspect your roof after a storm. Ensure there are no leaks and remove any debris that could further damage your home. Check for any signs of moisture in your attic as well as this could be a sign that there is a hole somewhere you might’ve missed.
  6. Gutters – Strong winds and falling branches can damage your gutters or even completely rip them off the side of your house. Your gutters are essential in preventing water from getting into your home and directing it away from your home’s foundation. Make sure that your gutters are in good condition and free from any debris that may clog them.

While storm damage may not always be 100% preventable, hopefully, these tips can help you prevent any further damage from happening, and if you do happen to find any signs of damage to your home after a storm. Our technicians are here to help. We’re available 24/7, 365 days a year, so don’t wait, give us a call and let us know what we can do for you.

How to Get Yourself Prepared During Storm Damage Times

Storm Warning

Storms are unpredictable forces of nature that can wreak havoc on our homes and lives.

From heavy rain and powerful winds to lightning strikes and flooding, storm damage can be devastating. However, being prepared is the key to staying safe and minimizing the impact of storms.

In this article, we'll discuss essential steps to get yourself prepared during storm damage times.

1. Stay Informed: The first step in storm preparedness is staying informed about weather forecasts. Keep an eye on weather updates from reliable sources. Download weather apps or use weather websites to receive alerts and updates in real-time.

2. Create an Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit that includes essential items like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, blankets, a battery-powered radio, and important documents. Make sure the kit is easily accessible in case of power outages.

3. Develop an Evacuation Plan: If you live in an area prone to severe storms or flooding, have an evacuation plan in place. Identify evacuation routes and shelters in your area. Ensure that every family member knows the plan and practice it periodically.

4. Secure Your Home: Prepare your home for storm damage by securing loose items in your yard, such as patio furniture and trash cans. Trim overhanging tree branches that could fall on your property during a storm. Consider installing storm shutters or reinforce windows to protect against flying debris.

5. Backup Power: If you live in an area prone to power outages, consider investing in a backup power source like a generator. Ensure it's properly maintained and ready to use when needed.

6. Flood Insurance: Check your insurance policies to ensure you have adequate coverage for storm-related damage. Standard homeowner's insurance may not cover all storm-related losses, especially flood damage. Consider purchasing a separate flood insurance policy if you live in a flood-prone area.

7. Communication Plan: Establish a communication plan with family and friends. Ensure everyone knows how to reach each other in case of separation during a storm. Designate an out-of-town contact person to serve as a central point of contact.

8. Stay Inside During the Storm: When a storm hits, stay indoors, and avoid unnecessary travel. High winds and heavy rain can make driving dangerous. Keep windows and doors closed to prevent water and debris from entering your home.

9. Post-Storm Inspection: After the storm has passed, conduct a thorough inspection of your property. Check for damage to your roof, siding, windows, and foundation. Take photos of any damage for insurance purposes.

10. Professional Help: If you discover significant storm damage to your home, it's essential to seek professional assistance. Contact a reputable restoration and repair service to assess and address the damage promptly.

Storm damage times can be challenging, but with proper preparation and a clear plan, you can safeguard your home and loved ones.

Also, don't forget we as SERVPRO are always here to help. Remember, your safety should always be your top priority. Stay safe, stay informed, and be ready to take action when needed.

Staying Safe During a Storm

Never underestimate the power of a storm! They are dangerous events of nature that can harm you or destroy your home in the right conditions. So how do you minimize your risk in a storm?

1. Find Shelter! If it is storming, make sure you find a place with shelter (home or vehicle) with windows closed that protects you from the rain and lightning. If possible, find a larger closed off structure as they are safer than small and open areas.

2. Avoid conductive or electrical tool and item use while it's storming so you do not risk shocking yourself.

3. If you see the lightning/hear thunder, then you are already at risk.

4. The louder and more frequent you hear thunder, the closer lightning is to your location.

5. Minimize your driving, especially in areas of outage. Traffic incidents rise sharply at intersections that are suffering from outage problems, and your car may skid on roads especially where flooding exists.

Storm Warnings can pop up anywhere: TV, cell phone warnings, radio, etc., but do we really understand what these warnings mean? Know these definitions so you are prepared for any storm:

  • Tornado Watch Conditions are ripe for tornadoes within the watch area. Tornadoes associated with hurricanes and tropical storms are typically a very significant cause of death and damage.
  • Tornado Warning A tornado has been spotted visually or on radar. Usually issued for a county. If a tornado WARNING is issued where you live, GET TO THE MIDDLE OF THE LOWEST FLOOR OF A STRONG BUILDING IMMEDIATELY!!!
  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch Conditions are ripe for severe thunderstorms within the watch area.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning There is a severe thunderstorm in or heading for the warned area. Treat this like a tornado warning!!
  • Flash Flood Watch Flash floods are likely to occur in the near future. Be alert for rising water and be prepared to have to move to high ground.
  • Flash Flood Warning Flash floods are occurring or expected to occur in the near future. If this happens, get to high ground immediately, and GET AWAY FROM VEHICLES... it only takes 18 inches of water to sweep a car or truck away!
  • High Wind Advisory Windy conditions may occur in the advisory area. This usually makes for unsafe conditions while driving, especially in (but not limited to) large vehicles. Also, avoid boating anywhere in the advisory area.
  • High Wind Warning Very strong winds are expected or already are occurring that present a significant danger while driving, boating and other outdoor activities. Often issued near tropical storms and hurricanes.
